Girls=Solutions « SmartGirlsOutLoud

Today, the lead story on CNN.com was about 22 year old Afghan woman, Aesha.  She was given to a man at a young age in payment for a crime of her relatives in traditional custom.  After years of abuse from her in laws and husband, she ran away and was punished by having her ears and nose hacked off.  She then came to the United States where she was given a home at the Women for Afghan Women shelter in New York City.

Aesha was raised in a village ruled by the Taliban and was not given access to education. She came to the states not even literate in her own language, and although thriving with an Afghan family in Maryland, her story is still unfolding.

Organizations like the Girl Effect  and 10×10 are working to bring education and equality to girls all over the world.  They believe, and have proven, that societies who educate girls are stronger and more productive.  Girls=Solutions.  I do not pretend to know the solutions to the problems in Afghanistan or Syria or South Sudan, but I know that the empowerment of girls and women are key.  Aesha has endured horrors that I can’t imagine, and she represents thousands of women and girls in her country who are still suffering.   Aesha’s story does not have an ending yet, and her journey has been difficult to say the least, but she is now going to school.  She is learning that she does not have to get married again if she does not want to.  She is learning that she can be independent.  She can be free.

Hindus and Sikhs complain about the media's use of “Asian” for the …

Groups representing Sikh and Hindu communities have complained about the term “Asian” being used to describe the men involved in grooming trials.

Earlier this month, nine men were jailed for being part of a sex ring in Rochdale which groomed girls for sex.

The groups said the men involved were “almost always of Pakistani origin” and the term “Asian” was inaccurate.

The Ramadan Foundation has said grooming is “a significant problem for the British Pakistani community”.

The joint statement was released by the Network of Sikh Organisations UK, The Hindu Forum of Britain, and The Sikh Media Monitoring Group UK.

It says the reluctance of the media and the government to discuss the “disproportionate representation of Muslims in such cases” and the fact victims are “almost always non-Muslim girls” is adding to the cause of far-right groups such as the BNP.

It said blanket use of the word “Asian” was “unfair to other communities of Asian origin”.

“We believe that in this case the government itself is sanctioning the use of term Asian as a way of clouding responsibility,” the groups say.

Stifled debate

The groups say sex gangs have targeted Hindu and Sikh girls but the cases are rarely reported as they seldom reach the courts.

The statement says: “We believe that political correctness stifles debate and will not facilitate a frank and mature discussion or solutions to get to the root of why the above pattern is emerging in these crimes and how to help find a solution to the problem.

“We will not be able to do that if we mask the identity of those involved based on misguided views of ‘protecting a vulnerable community’ of the perpetrators and not looking at the vulnerable community of victims.”

Last Week Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of The Ramadhan Foundation, said: “There is an over-representation [of Asian men] amongst recent convictions in the crime of on-street grooming [and] there should be no silence in addressing the issue of race as this is central to the actions of these criminals,” he said.

He said community elders were “burying their heads” over the issue and police and local councils should not “be frightened” to address the problem, as there was “a strong lesson that you cannot ignore race or be over-sensitive”.

On Monday, the chair of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, Trevor Phillips, said the race of the men involved could not be ignored and it was “fatuous” to deny racial and cultural factors.

But assistant chief constable Steve Heywood, of Greater Manchester Police, said the case was not about race, but about “adults preying on vulnerable young children”.

Liverpool Crown Court heard the nine men plied their victims, one as young as 13, with drink and drugs so they could “pass them around” and use them for sex.

The case sparked protests by far-right groups but police insisted the grooming was not “racially motivated”.

crime victim advocacy: Sexual Assault Prevention Month

May 17th, 2012
Looking back, it amazes me how many people I know in my life who have been sexually abused or assaulted. And I am not talking about my work as a victim advocate – I mean people I grew up with and people I came to know as adults. The numbers are staggering when I stop and think about it.

Most, if not all of them, have never reported to police which is consistent with the statistics on sexual offences.

One in ten victims report to police. That number has been consistent for as long as we collected those stats which is pretty concerning considering the numerous attempts to make the criminal justice system more responsive to sexual assault victims.

Since the early 90s, most amendments to the Criminal Code that address sexual assault, including rape shield and third party records, actually reference the importance of encouraging victims to report. And yet the numbers don’t change.

Even when women do report to police, a senior officer recently told me he though about 80% change their mind and decide not to proceed. So one in ten don’t report…and of those (mostly) women, 80% change their mind.

When women don’t change their mind, charges are less likely to be laid by police than in other offences so the number gets smaller. And fewer cases are prosecuted and even fewer result in convictions.

Think about those numbers…how many (mostly) men who commit a sexual offence are held criminally responsible for their actions? I hope no one misunderstands me when I say this…but sexual assault is a pretty safe crime for a man to commit and not be convicted.

How can this be in 2012?

Well, despite how enlightened we all want to think we are, we still blame victims. I remember having a discussion with a senior police officer (not the same one mentioned above) who expressed doubt about young women who get drunk, flirt with men and then claim they were raped. The example given was an actual case of a woman who was at a sporting event, drinking and texting with a guy about getting together later that night. When he went to her place later that night, her door was unlocked and she was unconscious on the couch. She woke up to find him raping her. Now he (and perhaps this particular police officer) would say that he was having sex with her but this is rape – she was unconscious, unable to give consent to have sex so that makes it rape. It doesn’t matter what she said before – she cannot consent now. Therefore its rape!!

But how many people would see this the same way as the police officer? They might not all admit it, but too many people would agree with the officer.

The media doesn’t help. They usually only report assaults that occur in parking lots committed by strangers which are a minority of the sexual assaults that occur. The media creates a false impression that sex offenders are strangers and that sexual assaults cause injury to the victim. TV shows like CSI tells us all we need is the DNA and we got a conviction. But most offenders know their victims, there is rarely overt violence (beyond the act itself) and DNA is rarely an issue because most accused claim consent. But if the image of the sexual assault victim is the pretty young woman walking to her car late at night, what about the university student who got drunk at a party and is sexually assault by someone in her class, or the sex trade worker who was raped by a client or the wife raped by her husband? They don’t fit our image of the rape victim so maybe they are not rape victims. Maybe, as I heard one justice professional say at a training event, she was just a girl who felt guilty for chearing on her boyfriend and decided to yell rape.

As for the justice system, what do we expect? To make real, systemic meaningful change, everyone involved in the system would have to want that change. But one part of the equation – the defence – benefits from myths and stereotypes about women who cry rape. They benefit from a system that puts women on trial and rips their dignity to shreds. The question should not be why more women do not report…but why any women do.

You would think, given how many times the Harper cabinet ministers have talked about the amount of unreported crime and specifically mentioned sexual assault victims, that the federal government would be seized with this issue. They are, after all, the victim friendly government, right? I mean, everything they do from building more prison cells to not building more prisons to making prisoners pay for their phone calls is about victims. But sexual assault victims are not the right kind of victims for this government because most of what they do is focused on families of homicide victims. The repeal of the faint hope clause, longer sentences for multiple killers and benefits for parents of murdered children who take time off work…much of what this government has done is in response to calls from families of homicide victims. And that’s not to say these are not important issues or that the measures taken are all bad.

But there are far more sexual assault victims than homicide victims and the only thing one can find they have done in relation to sexual assault is remove conditional sentences for sexual assault (unless the Crown proceeds summarily) and bring in some mandatory minimum sentences for sexual offences against children. Trust me when I say none of this will make any difference for the overwhelming majority of women or children. In the case of children, it might do more damage because it might actually dissuade reporting since many victims are related to their abusers and don’t always want to see them go to jail; just to have the abuse stop.

The solutions to the sexual assault of women (or men) and the sexual abuse of children lay, largely, outside the criminal justice system. That’s not to say that victims should not report and offenders should not be prosecuted. But raising the stakes in the system means more victims have to testify and that is not a good thing. Another cop told me that MMPs means more victims have to go to court since offenders won’t plead guilty…and that also raises the risk of acquittals.

May is Sexual Assault Prevention Month. The federal government’s exclusive reliance on prisons as a solution to every criminal problem is not likely to prevent many sexual assaults. They would be far better to invest in prevention, education and support for victims where they go for help (which is usually not the police). These are not messages the government likes to hear and sadly, the risks for groups to express dissenting opinions is becoming more and more risky. The government has already chosen those groups they will listen to, who agree with everything the government does, and anyone who expresses a different opinion is the enemy. And if you depend on this government for any funding, being seen as the enemy is not a good thing.

And a message to all the dads out there – talk to your sons about what being a real man means. It is not about how many women you sleep with, or using your size to intimidate people or any of that macho bullshit so many of us grew up believing. It is about honesty and respect and kindness. Teach our boys that and we will do more to end sexual violence than anything Stephen Harper could ever do.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Calls Coal 'Corrupting' At Portland Rally

May 8th, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Monday that a proposal to bring coal to Oregon and Washington state will lead to political corruption and environmental damage, while the actual number of jobs it will create is minimal.

Speaking at an anti-coal rally, Kennedy said coal’s influence would seep into the Statehouse, buying legislators who would otherwise vote against the proposal with campaign money and the promise of jobs.

“It’s going to end up leaving Portland with a legacy of pollution, poison and corruption,” Kennedy said.

About a half-dozen proposals would bring coal mined in Western states to ports in Oregon and Washington state. It would then be exported to China.

Environmentalists argue that the dust emitted from trains hauling coal would settle and pollute the proposed routes — including parts of Portland — while opening the door to further environmental damage from its use in Asia.

Kennedy said the U.S. believes it can export the environmental problems from coal, but it will find that mercury from its use in Asia washes up on the Pacific shore while acidifying the ocean.

“Anybody who touches coal gets poisoned by it,” said Kennedy, president of the environmental advocacy group Waterkeeper Alliance. “You don’t just get sick. It poisons democracy, it poisons communities, it poisons values.

“Coal is crime. Do not let it come through this community.”

Proponents argue that the coal shipments would create much-needed jobs at the ports in a state where unemployment has hovered near the double digits since the Great Recession began.

Millennium Bulk Terminals, a Columbia River port in Longview, Wash., has applied for permits to make it one of the largest coal exporters in North America.

“I’m not sure a rally in Portland for a few hours will overshadow … the commitment we’ve made to creating jobs here in Longview,” said Millennium Bulk Terminals-Longview president Ken Miller. “Millennium is making a significant investment in our community and we are proud of our plan to create hundreds of jobs in Cowlitz County.”

Kennedy said in interviews before the rally that the job gains would be minimal, especially compared with the amount of damage created by producing and shipping coal.

“We’ve got lots of better sources for jobs,” Kennedy said. “If you were really interested in jobs, let’s build wind farms, let’s build solar plants. Let’s use the marketplace to incentivize good behavior.”

Major U.S. Prescription Drug Ring — Busted! | Treatment Solutions

May 5th, 2012

This week, news broke: eleven people were charged for their involvement in a Florida-based crime ring tied to the major Connecticut heist in 2010, where thieves stole $80 MILLION in prescription drugs from a warehouse in CT. The investigation has been ongoing ever since, under the guise of “Operation Southern Hospitality.”

According to Fox News: “The thieves hit warehouses and stole tractor-trailers around the country, often from highway rest stops, and brought the drugs to South Florida in an attempt to sell them.

The medications included antidepressants, anti-psychotics and treatments for cancer, acne, epilepsy, arthritis, autoimmune disorders and other ailments, authorities said. Undercover FBI agents were able to buy all the stolen drugs to prevent them from entering the marketplace, said John Gillies, chief of the Miami FBI office.

“This investigation represents the largest takedown in U.S. history involving cargo theft,” Gillies said. “There were a lot of missing pieces to this case. We had no idea of the scope.”‘

Between January-March of 2010, 37-year-old ring leader Amaury Villa led brothers and friends in a crime spree that reads like the perfect plot for a Hollywood movie, involving back-and-forth flights from Miami to New York, shady emails about tractor trailer leases, car rentals and a surveillance video that surfaced, actually catching the thieves in the act. In the end, as The Boston Herald reported, “Amed Villa allegedly touched a water bottle that had been stored in the warehouse and left it there after he departed, prosecutors said. His fingerprints provided a clue that apparently helped investigators zero in on the brothers as suspects.”

In some instances, criminals posed as genuine prescription salesmen, possibly tampering with the drugs along the way, according to the FBI — which could have harmed many innocent, unwitting people. Depending on their sentences, the suspects will be in jail up to 10 years, max. Not enough, if you ask me.

Do YOU think crimes like these will cause prescription drugs to become more regulated? Should they be more regulated, to do whatever it takes to prevent criminals from stealing and selling massive amounts of prescription drugs to people who may not even need them for health reasons, and putting people who do, in danger?

…And who will play Amaury Villa when this is all made into movie? So many questions!
